District councils want Derry line restored

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

The Tyrone Times has reported that Dungannon, Donegal, Derry, Omagh, Fermanagh and Craigavon Councils have had discussions with a view to seeking restoration of the Derry Road (Portadown to Derry railway line).

Whilst I cannot see this happening anytime soon, I would hope that they also have the foresight to prevent encroachment on the right of way along the alignment of the route - especially as none of the route is in public ownership any more - the NI administration having compelled adjacent landowners to buy the route back.

BBC article on Malahide viaduct

The BBC website has a piece about the reopening of the line across the Broadmeadow Estuary. I wonder where they got the photo of the TARA Mines train.

As one line opens, another closes

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Just as Irish Rail think they are out of the woods with the reopening of the Dublin - Belfast line, the Rosslare line gets hit with multiple landslides and flooding along with a train derailment.

Sometimes, you just wonder, did you get out of bed on the wrong side?

Waste of electricity at Pace

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Obviously the builders of the M3 road/rail flyover at Pace have heard of neither global warming nor the fact that we are in a recession. The underpass that carries the R157 over the Dunboyne - Navan rail alignment at Pace has lights in the underpass and these were on when I passed by today - despite that the fact that there isn’t any track or trains within a considerable distance!

Cannistown Underground

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

I was in the Navan area today so I took the opportunity to look at the Cannistown Underground. The building of the M3 toll road has upset save Tara activists and also severed the Dunboyne to Navan railway alignment. An Bord Pleanala instructed the builders of the M3 to include an underpass for the future railway to Navan to pass under.

As the M3 is at the same level as the trackbed of the Dunboyne - Navan alignment at Cannistown, there is a drop between the trackbed and the underpass floor that makes the gap between the bridge and road at Hazelhatch look reasonable.

Forget about the Metro to Dublin Airport, Navan will be getting an underground by 2015 if you believe Noel Dempsey.

The Irish Independent has reported that the railway line between Malahide and Donabate is to reopen on Monday 16th November.

Near miss on Boston Subway

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Many news sites, including the Irish Independent have reported on this video clip of a drunk passenger falling onto the tracks of the Boston Subway.

As she has admitted being drunk, I would hope that she faces criminal charges.
