Midleton Line to reopen

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I never thought I would see the day, but it is now here. Services to/from Midleton recommence today on what is, in my opinion, not quite the first proper reopening of a railway line in Ireland, but we are getting there. I don’t consider LUAS on the Harcourt Street line to count as it is light rail and Ennis doesn’t either as the line there was in continuous use for freight.

In the case of Midleton, the line was rebuilt and therefore sort of counts as the first railway reopening in Ireland. However, the genuine article will come when trains return to Dunboyne.

B&CDR Trust seeking to buy locomotive

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

The BBC has reported that the Belfast & County Down Railway Trust (not to be confused with the Downpatrick Railway Society) are negotiating with Irish Rail to buy a 141 Class locomotive, which they intend to name after Northern Irish footballer David Healy.

The B&CDR Trust are seeking to restore a section of the former Belfast & County Down Railway.

Due to the presence of the already operational Downpatrick Railway Society, the inevitable bitching and side swiping that is an unfortunate part of railway enthusiasm in Ireland is well under way with the latter berating the former’s attempts at every available turn. Perhaps, lads, if you were to co-operate, you could both advance.

Redundant sleepers stolen and sold

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

You’d think with an ability to show initiative like this, that the cretins who work in Irish Rail would figure out ways to treat their customers appropriately.
