Currently on board this company’s service from Edinburgh to Newcastle. In first class, there is complimentary food/drink but my main observation is on the free wifi access. The homepage for this displays journey information, including ETA at each station and a Google map of where the train is currently. Irish Rail, eat your heart out.

Inaccuracy on IRN

It is rare that I comment on something that I see on Irish Railway News, as the information so posted is usually correct. However, the assertion in this discussion that there is no evidence that Hodgson’s Tramway passed under the DW&WR is wrong. Kevin Murray’s IRRS article on the tramway references the underbridge as does “The Avoca Mineral Tramway - A Further Look Into An Early County Wicklow Mineral Tramway” by Waldron, Sheehan and Wilson in the Journal of the Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland - p35. The following link to the OSI Mapviewer site shows what is the site of the underpass (it may be necessary to select Historic 25″ Map).

In my research on the ground for a paper presented to the NAMHO conference in Avoca in 2003, I located the site of the bridge on the ground with what appeared to be the overgrown abutments idenitifiable on the Down side of the mainline to Rosslare. I would post this info on IRN - however, it has not been possible for me to register thereon.

The Irish Independent reports today that punctuality on Irish Rail has improved - however, notes that this is due to the gobshite definition of punctuality practiced in this child abusing nation of ours, which is that up to 10 minutes late is on time.

Not good enough. If I don’t pay the appropriate fare, I get a penalty fare. As the State is obliged to treat all equally or not at all and specifically cannot favour itself, I look forward to the prosecution of Dublin Bus for this act of theft. Let it be put on record that I do not accept donations to charity in lieu of conviction - having previously worked in the finance department of one of the leading charitable organisations on this island (which shall remain nameless), I have seen the waste and inappropriate spending of money donated that occurs in such organisations.
